This old estate consists of 18,2 has (45 acres) planted 95% in the old system of pergolas, with different varietals mixed together in each parcel, including some little known varietals.
The predominant varietal is Torrontés and the great majority of the vines are more than 40 years old. This gives the vines an already well-developed balance that translates into reliable quality year after year.
The pergola vine training system, although considered somewhat Old World, is actually very well suited for varietals such as Torrontés and Pink Moscatel because it allows the varietals to express their great vigor and maintain their usually large production levels without compromising quality. At the same time, it protects the bunches against excessive sun, helping to preserve the fresh aromas and the pink and greenish colors of the leaves. This last point also makes this system good for the red varietals, although we have only very few acres of red grapes in this estate, including more than thirty-year old vineyards of Malbec and Tannat, which altogether total 5,6 hectares (13.8 acres).
Finally we have only 1,6 hectares (3.9 acres) of four-year old, vertically trained Syrah, which has surprised us with its quality, as it is found in such a small corner of the estate. This corner has a special microclimate that protects the Syrah from excessive sunlight and from the warm, dry winds, which is especially important for this varietal with its tendency toward premature dehydration.
The vineyard management in this estate comes from a focus on sustainable production, so we use goat manure as fertilizer and work the soil as little as possible. Pest and disease control, which are infrequent and on a case-by-case basis, are done in an integrated manner with minimal and well-thought out intervention.
In the nursery we grow our own plants for replanting and to increase the density of plantation.
